Highway Bill in Trouble – Act NOW!
The Obama Administration and some members of the U.S. Senate are pushing to extend the current authorization of the federal highway and public transportation programs until March 2011. The equipment manufacturing industry and the U.S. economy cannot afford this delay. A fully funded, multi-year reauthorization of the surface transportation programs is critical to real, sustainable economic recovery and to our nation’s security, safety and competitiveness.
Rep. Jim Oberstar (D-MN), Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure, is leading the fight for work to start on a multi-year reauthorization bill this year. Our industry needs to support Chairman Oberstar’s efforts – contact White House and your Senators and Representative today to tell them to support a multi-year reauthorization NOW!
Note:
A recent study by Dr. Stephen Fuller of George Mason University estimated that, on average, 6.4 cents of each dollar spent by government on roads is used to buy equipment and related services. Thus, doubling the size of the federal highway program from roughly $40 billion to $80 billion (as some have recommended) would create more than $2.5 billion in new equipment market opportunity each year.
