Urge Your Senators to Include Rebates in Jobs Legislation

Since January 2009, ASA and its W.A.T.E.R. Act Coalition partners have lead an industry-wide effort to encourage Congress to provide tax incentives to residential and commercial property owners who install quality products that conserve water.

With the next election in November, Congress and the White House have made jobs their number one legislative priority, and jobs, especially green jobs, legislation is now working its way through Washington.  This presents a distinct opportunity for ASA and its W.A.T.E.R. Act Coalition partners to advance legislation that helps the economy, the environment and the businesses throughout our industry’s supply chain.

As a result of the W.A.T.E.R. Act Coalition’s efforts, Congress increasingly recognizes that conservation is one, key component to preserving our nation’s liquid assets, and incentives for individuals and businesses to conserve water that also help create jobs and spur economic growth help make the case even more appealing.

Keep in mind that today, Americans use 300 percent more water than they did 50 years ago putting a tremendous strain on the nation’s water supply and environment.  Water shortages have become an increasing dilemma for many communities struggling with drought conditions, The U.S. E.P.A. estimates that if a family of 4 installs WaterSense faucets, showerheads and toilets, they could save 17,000 gallons of water each year.  In fact, if every home replaced just one old toilet with a WaterSense labeled high-efficiency toilet, the water savings would be enough to supply nearly 10 million U.S. households with water for a year.

ASA’S CONTINUING EFFORTS

 It’s very important that all ASA members contact their U.S. Senators encouraging them to urge Senate leadership to include rebates for plumbing and irrigation efficiency retrofits in legislation to create jobs and boost the economy.  Not only will investment in water-efficient retrofits create near-term job throughout the plumbing industry, but also, installation of EPA-approved WaterSense products will save consumers money, save billions of gallons of water, reduce energy consumption, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
