Tell Your Member of Congress to Vote NO on the “Healthy Families Act”

The Healthy Families Act (H.R. 2460/S. 1152) has been introduced in Congress by Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA).  This bill requires employers with 15 or more employees to provide employees 56 hours of paid sick leave per year.  This government mandated leave requirement limits employers’ ability to provide the benefits that best fit the needs of their workforce and increases the cost of doing business in the United States.

“One-size-fits-all” solutions do not benefit American workers.  Imposing paid leave mandates on employers threatens jobs and the viability of businesses large and small. This legislation will reduce benefit design flexibility, limit or eliminate the customized benefit options currently available to employees, and could jeopardize employee wages and benefits.

This legislation threatens the use of “paid time off banks” that allow employees to pool their time off based on how they deem best for their individual needs.  Paid sick leave under this proposal would be separate from paid time off that is “banked” by the employee if the leave does not precisely fit the requirements prescribed under the legislation.

The Healthy Families Act increases the threat of litigation against employers as the bill would allow employees to sue to recover damages, interest on damages, and attorneys’ fees for employer non-compliance.

Contact your Members of Congress now to express your opposition to the “Healthy Families Act”.  Urge your elected officials to oppose all votes on the HFA.  This legislation threatens jobs growth, restricts flexible benefit designs and creates a government mandate on manufacturers large and small.
