The Best to Worst on the MERI Scale

Below are the average MERI Ratings of legislators during the time they have served. The Maine Economic Research Institute (MERI) rates legislators' performance based on votes cast as well as subjective evaluations of their behavior on issues of importance to Maine's business community. In our view, those scoring higher than 50 have demonstrated their willingness and ability to work for a strong Maine economy. Those scoring between 26 and 50 need to need to improve their behavior.

We believe that those with an average MERI rating of 25 or lower (in bold) are the people least likely, willing or able to move Maine toward the national average for tax burden, energy costs, health care costs or business climate. In fact, their behavior can be described as hostile toward getting or retaining good jobs in Maine. We also suspect that their records do not reflect the wishes, hopes or aspirations of the majority of the people they represent back home.
