RAILPAC Information
BNSF RAILPAC is the principal source (by law) that gives us access to government officials. We use this access to educate and inform public officials about our industry and our company in hopes of guiding good public policies in a broad range of areas, including economic regulation, taxation, mergers and retirement programs. Such policies have enormous long-term influence on the success of our industry and our company. Federal election law prevents corporate contributions to candidates for federal office (e.g., U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate, U.S. President). State election laws in some states in BNSF territory also prevent corporate contributions in state and local races. In these instances, the only way BNSF can participate in the election process is through political action committee funds (BNSF RAILPAC). BNSF must be able to take part in the process of electing people who can decide the future of our company. Each of us has a stake in its future. By pooling our individual contributions through BNSF RAILPAC, we can direct campaign funds to help elect candidates who share our views on the important issues affecting BNSF and its employees. We also must support those who are willing to listen to our side of an issue and then make an objective, fair decision. Like any other business, we have opponents and competitors who use their PACs to their own advantage. We must do the same. For more information, please contact RAILPAC@BNSF.COM. BNSF matches your calendar year PAC contributions dollar-for-dollar by donating money in your name to the 501(c)(3) charity of your choice. Contributions made through PAC Match come from corporate funds, not PAC funds. So, the program in no way diminishes the RAILPAC funds available for political contributions. How Candidates are SelectedThe Advisory Committee (shown above) decides how best to contribute money. They compare the candidates' views on issues with BNSF's and consider the merits of individual candidates. They also consider other factors, such as whether the candidate represents part of the BNSF system, what committees he or she serves on and voting records. These factors are reviewed without regard to political party. As a BNSF RAILPAC contributor, you also may recommend candidates for our support by writing to the Treasurer, whose address is shown on the Who to Contact page. Important InformationParticipation in BNSF RAILPAC is voluntary. Participation or nonparticipation does not reflect in any way upon job evaluation or promotion potential. Federal law requires political committees to report the name, mailing address, occupation, and name of employer for each individual whose contributions aggregate in excess of $200 in a calendar year. All political contributions, including those to our political action committee, are no longer eligible for a federal tax credit or deduction. |
