Incumbent Senator Rob Portman (R) defeated former Governor Ted Strickland (D) in what is traditionally a battleground state for both parties. Portman ran a campaign that not only brought in Republicans and independents, but also sought out and won over Democratic union voters and other groups that tend to vote for Democratic candidates. It is also worth noting that Strickland was not as strong of a candidate as Democrats had hoped due to his unpopularity in Ohio from being Governor and also his inability to launch a strong campaign financially or organizationally.
